What is accountsd

The accountsd framework also goes by another name you may be more familiar with: iCloud keychain.

If you were to login to these apps on your Mac – then the iPad – iCloud keychain (or accountsd) would sync that data across devices to make the sign-in process smoother.

From time to time, you may see a popup notification that accountsd needs access to the keychain. Don’t worry; nothing is wrong!

Why does this message appear on your Mac?

Plainly put, your keychain is not synced with the app or service you’re using. Apps may still open, but you may receive a prompt that accountsd needs access to the keychain for things to operate further.

When you first login to an app on your Mac, it saves those credentials in keychain access, and accountsd is used to access the necessary information. Each time you open an app, it attempts to verify your credentials through accountsd. When it can’t, it continues to prompt you to allow access to keychain so it knows to trust you.

How to Fix 'Accountsd Wants to Use the Login Keychain'

Now that we know what keychain and accountsd are, and how they work together, let’s address the core issue: that pesky popup notification!

Here are a few steps to remedy the issue:

Turn Keychain Auto-Lock OFF

Though accountsd and iCloud Keychain are interchangeable, there may be some passwords that are still saved locally instead of in the cloud. And that local vault may be locked. Here’s how to fix it:

  1. Open Keychain Access on your Mac
  2. Right click the “login” module on the right side of the app window
  3. Select “Change Settings for Keychain “login”” from the drop down menu
  4. In the new window, uncheck the “Lock after” and “Lock when sleeping” options
  5. Select “Save”

This is the most common fix for the accountsd popup. If this doesn’t work, there are a few other solutions that may work for you.

Create New Keychain

This may seem a bit drastic, but remember you’re not altering the old keychain. Mac keeps the older version of keychain handy, so this won’t break anything. Instead, it creates a copy of the vault, which you’ll rename.

  1. Open Finder on your Mac
  2. From the menu bar, select “Go”
  3. Select “Go to folder” from the drop down menu

Type this destination into the text entry field under “Go to the folder”: ~/Library/Keychains

  1. Select “Go”
  2. Select the folder “Keychains”
  3. Holding down the Option key, drag the folder onto your desktop
  4. Right click or click and hold the name of the folder copied to your desktop
  5. Rename the folder

Passwords should always be secure, never duplicated, and hosted safely. Keychain access is a great storage container for passwords, but the best method for securing accounts is to use time-based one time passwords (TOTP) as a two-factor authorization method. And the best Mac app for this purpose is Step Two.

Step Two allows you to manually add your own credentials, or use an app’s QR code to automatically add usernames and passwords to the Step Two vault. Apps that ask for TOTP verification weave through Step Two, which creates a temporary password you can use to access apps.

It has an iOS counterpart, and all credentials can be synced in iCloud for a seamless desktop and mobile experience.

Use Keychain First Aid

Macs using macOS Catalina or older can run Keychain First Aid, which takes a hard look at your credentials to identify issues for specific apps or services. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Open the Keychain Access app on your Mac
  2. From the menu bar, select “Keychain Access”
  3. Select “Keychain First Aid” from the drop down menu
  4. Enter the username and password for the app you’re having issues accessing
  5. Make sure “Verify” is selected, and select “Start”

With macOS Big Sur, Apple removed the First Aid option. This is likely because credentials are stored in iCloud by default, and allowing diagnostic access to a web property may be a security issue. In its beta stages, some users reported issues with Big Sur’s keychain access which has since been remedied.

A move to iCloud also allows Apple to monitor your usernames and passwords, then compare them to known hacks. If you were using the same username/email and password for multiple sites, and one had a breach, Big Sur will warn you the credentials were compromised, and advise you to change them immediately. It’s as if Apple is doing First Aid for you, now!

Reset Local Keychain

Local keychain access may be the real culprit, so here’s how to reset it:

  1. Open the Keychain Access app on your Mac
  2. From the menu bar, select “Keychain Access”
  3. Select “Preferences” from the drop down menu
  4. Select “Reset My Default Keychains”
  5. Enter a new, secure keychain password
  6. Select “OK”
  7. Log out of your Mac, then back in to fully reset local keychain access

Remove iCloud Keychain

It’s also possible your iCloud keychain is not synced properly. Here’s how to remove (and re-add) it from your Mac:

  1. Select the Apple logo on your Mac’s menu bar
  2. Choose “System Preferences” from the drop down menu
  3. Select “Apple ID” at the top right of the new window
  4. Scroll down to find “Keychain” and deselect it
  5. Restart your Mac

When you’re ready, simply select Keychain in your Apple ID menu to add all your login items back to your Mac.

I repeatedly see the popup:
'identityservicesd wants to use your confidential information stored in '<key>' in your keychain'
If I click 'always allow' it still comes up.
I've followed instructions elsewhere on this forum to open Keychain Access and use First Aid, but to no avail.
Previously I would receive the popup 'messages app wants to use your confidential information...' but I changed the Access Control to allow all applications to access this item, hoping that would do the trick. But sadly it didn't work.
Any ideas?
(Also, ever since upgrading to Mavericks, it wants to go through first-time setup every time I log in. I'm prompted to enter my iCloud password, etc. etc. but the above problem predates that)

My immediate reaction is to deny.
Have you downloaded or installed any application that may relate to the abbreviation AOS? It may not necessarily be the application's name, could be the developer or distributor.
As it's occuring at log-in, go to System Preferences > Accounts > your account > Login Items and look for a related item. If there's one there, right-click (or ctrl click) on it and select Reveal in Finder. That will show you where the originator of the item is on your system and should give you more of a clue as to what it is.
I'd remove the item from login items anyway (highlight and click the minus sign at the bottom of the window). There shouldn't be anything trying to use your keychain info to notify anyone.

    Change your settings in Sharing preferences, for one, and remove the server out of the Finder's sidebar. Obviously, this is the result of transfering all your other computer's preferences to your new computer.

    I have had this same issue but thankfully fixed it. Follow he steps below:
    Sync your iPhone with you iTunes therefore your info is backed up. Unplug your phone.
    Go to Settings > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings
    Once your phone has reset and come back on answer the question until it asks if you want to back up from itunes Click this then plug your phone in.
    After everything has sync'd back to your phone everything should work fine.

  • OSX 10.10.2 fresh new iMac.
    When I open FaceTime and log in, I'm presented with a message.wants to use your confidential information stored in ids:<my appleID emailaddress> - AuthToken in your keychain. Option to Always Allow, Deny or Allow. Clicking either one will bring me back to FaceTime login screen. I'm not able to login.
    Google search results suggest resetting KeyChain or Since this is a new mac, I don't really have anything in my Keychain.
    I've already went into Keychain preferences and made sure it was unlocked and even reset the Keychain preferences.
    I'm able to login on my iPhone and my other iMac running 10.10.2 as well.

  • it happens every time i turn firefox on. FYI: i do have firefox private browsing on (if that makes a difference).

    I think I solved it.
    I searched my extensions folder (in my profile) for all image files (PNG and JPG), and found the pop-up images to be in an extension folder related to Firefox Sync (not an external extension, actually). But even though I had already disabled it and un-linked this computer from Firefox Sync, the message still popped-up.
    I think the image filename was SYNC.PNG, or something like that. Close Firefox, find the folder where that image is in, and rename the main folder (the one right under the extensions folder) to some other name (such as 'original name_copy'). Then start Firefox. Check if it works OK and if the pop-up ceases to appear. If everything OK, then you can delete that folder.
    If something goes wrong, just rename the folder to what it was before.

    The pop up is usually run as a scheduled task, so open windows Control Panel, open Administrative Tools and open Task Scheduler. Left click once on Task Scheduler Library to highlight it and look for an entry called 'Webreg'. Left click this once to highlight it, then right click and select Disable. Restart the Pc for the change to take effect.
